It’s not his fault. He was invited to Marie’s birthday, then both she and her father called her sister the star of the night. Any normal person would think the birthday girl would be the star of the night, so obviously the dressed up and doted upon girl was Marie. How was he supposed to know the inner workings of the house? He could immediately tell Marie was looked down on, but that doesn’t mean he’d be able to jump to the conclusion that they’d also exclude her from her own birthday, when she herself mentioned her sister as the night’s star. Then, as we just saw he was too blinded by rage and love to think much further than sending the proposal, which he did almost immediately. He obviously wanted to get Marie out of there ad soon as possible.
