I don’t think he needs to be less nice, I think he needs to be a bit more perceptive. Sometimes when people aren’t in the mood to chat, quiet company is better than trying to fill the air with babble they don’t want to hear. And if you can peaceably keep someone’s company for a while, maybe they’ll start opening up and talking to you at that point.
I don’t blame him for being who he is. He’s a real kid, unlike our MC. It’s just that his naivety doesn’t help him understand her any better.
