I don’t think Illiana wanted Magnus to be her pet. The moment she saw Magnus she realised that he was the third prince, and she chose him to be her executioner. Lina started with psychological torture to break apart and put back together, his mind so that it would never break under any kind of pressure. She subjected him to all kinds of phobic elements to eradicate his fears, and constantly brainwashed and drugged him to make him resistant to drugs and brainwashing. We saw that she was slowly strengthening his body and even giving him books to read so that he would be able to become smarter and physically stronger than his two brothers. Also, Lina was expecting Mag’s escape as witnessed by what she wrote in that diary. She loved him with all her heart but always thought of herself as unworthy of him. She saw that Mag was also the scapegoat of his family, who was constantly abused and tortured by his brothers, just as she was abused by her father. She didn’t want Mag to be a weak helpless existence like herself. That is why she modelled Mag as a ferocious beast who would destroy anything that stood in his way. The thing she didn’t expect was for Mag to fall in love with her as well. Even though it sounds a bit twisted, Mag does love Lina. Even in the original novel, I am guessing that Mag loved Lina. That is why Mag never killed Lina. Mag wanted to own Lina. Lina was Mag’s Sole Object of Affection. I don’t know what is going to happen, but this back-and-forth is quite interesting for me.
