Well from what I’ve read the priest purposely twisted his words and made the prince believe that ash will ruin the empire with her darkness and if he went near her then light would be sucked out of him and also told the prince never to go into the empresses palace. The princes real mother the previous empress abused him into becoming the perfect emperor. So I’m sure he assumed if he went near Ash then many terrible things would happen to him.
